The Underwear Expert Editor-in-Chief Michael Kleinmann:

Weeks before Valentine’s Day, I usually come across men’s underwear that ties into this beloved holiday but fails to capture the imagination. I recently came across an original concept, however, from Papi’s Valentine’s collection. It includes the Papi Valentine’s License Plate Brazilian trunk, which features an all-over print of car license plates from different states in shades of black, red and white. This design offers a new interpretation for an otherwise non-creative holiday.

Papi first debuted the Valentine’s Day collection when the brand was launched in 1995. Every year, the brand comes up with new concepts to illustrate love and passion for men’s underwear. For 2013, this range was updated with new looks and sayings such as “I ♥ Papi” or “I ♥ Mami,” which are forms of endearment to husbands, wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, dads, mothers, kids–everyone. Among the new looks, the Papi Valentine’s License Plate Brazilian trunk design truly stands out.

I’m a huge car enthusiast. My favorite car has always been a 911 Targa. Cars are often a sex symbol for men and the design of the Papi Valentine’s License Plate Brazilian trunk are perfect not just to wear for the holiday but for the rest of the year. Valentine’s Day underwear often doesn’t sell as well for men. But I expect these trunks to be a success.

Papi once again releases its Valentine’s collection with an update of sexy new images and colors on a Brazilian trunk ($20) and muscle shirt ($24). Now available, the Papi Valentine’s collection has been updated with new design themes every year since the brand launched in 1995.

The latest installment of the Valentine’s range presents a creative mix of red and black colors. “We choose to use red as it has always been known as the color of love,” said Lucio De Carvalho, vice president of design for Papi. “Black is dark and mysterious so we felt the combination of the two was perfect for the sexy image that we imagined for this line.”

An ideal gift for Valentine’s Day, the Papi Valentine’s collection features graphic prints of universal symbols of love and passion such as hearts and kisses. The range also includes new interpretations of masculine sex appeal such as car license plates. “While doing our research for the season, we noticed that license plate graphics were going to be a big trend. Cars are often a sex symbol for men so we decided to incorporate a license plate graphic into this line to connect with that theme,” said De Carvalho.

Staying true to the brand’s roots, the collection offers fun Latin terms of endearment with select pieces that present sayings such as “I ♥ Papi” or “I ♥ Mami.” De Carvalho said, “It’s natural for Latinos to call their dearest love papi or mami. The words are forms of endearment to husbands, wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, dads, mothers, kids, everyone. We originally came up with the Papi Valentine’s collection for our customers to display this love.”

Available in S-XL, the Papi Valentine’s collection is made from a fabric blend of 88% polyester and 12% spandex, which offers a comfortable fit. The fabric combination adds to the soft touch of the contour pouch and elastic waistband. “All of our fabrics are super soft, making the garments not only sexy, but also comfortable, which is important for every man and every papi,” said De Carvalho.

The new Papi campaign by Greg Lotus marks the first collaboration between the brand and the photographer. The brand has long had its eyes on Lotus, who has done work for Italian VogueVanity Fair,GQL’Uomo Vogue and W magazine. The photos were shot on location in Miami Beach at a private mansion, showing off yachts, bedrooms and more gorgeous scenery.

Jorge and Jariel Naranjo Vichot star in the campaign. They are joined by Brazilian model Isabelle Fontes. The trio pose throughout the mansion for Lotus, who captures the grace and beauty of the models with both black and white and color images.

Alan Zelcer, the President and COO of Isaco International (parent company of Papi), said, “Papi has always been know to celebrate the spirit, strength, and sex appeal of today’s young man. It’s for the guy that is not afraid to take risk and Greg Lotus has really captured the essence of this in our new campaign. His high fashion experience is universally connected with our trendsetting product and collaborating with him is a perfect fit.”

Men’s Underwear: Red for the Holidays (PHOTOS)

Men’s underwear brands embraced red this season, making it all but impossible not to dress to impress down below for the holidays.

The color red, rarely offered in men’s underwear basics collections (which often are confined to black, white, blue and grey), has seen a resurgence in men’s fashion. With a strong presence in next spring’s men’s underwear offerings, as well, there’s talk of red joining the ranks of basics mainstays next year.

For this season, though, look out for deep, rich crimsons like C-IN2′s Blood Red, or the romantic reds used by Emporio Armani. Cherry red from the likes of Andrew Christian and MeUndies popped us, as well. Blood to cherry, these reds all pop — a perfect statement for the holidays.
